Nicholson Wins Arkabutla Dam Grout Repair Project

March 3, 2026
DeSoto, Mississippi

Nicholson Construction is excited to share that we have been selected to complete Phase 2 of the Interim Risk Reduction Measure at the Arkabutla Lake Dam in DeSoto County, Mississippi. This work is being performed because of a Dam Safety Emergency being issued by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. To further stabilize the dam and reduce risk to downstream communities, our team is brought in to perform grouting of the areas around the discharge conduit and stilling basin.

Phase 2 work is expected to begin June 1, 2026 with a tight 45-day window for base option scope, but we love a challenge. Our work will include drilling and grouting more than 160 holes throughout the conduit and stilling basin, installing two types of packer systems which includes putting a custom heavy‑duty packer design engineered for high‑pressure, artesian conditions.

We are grateful for the opportunity to support the long-term safety and reliability of the Arkabutla Dam.

“We’re proud to support the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on this critical phase of the Arkabutla Dam project. Our team is excited to use our expertise in complex grouting operations to help strengthen the dam and reduce risk for the surrounding communities.” - Josh Timmerick, Central Division Regional Manager
