Nicholson's Midwest Team Completes Work for Indiana's 3PORT Tunnel Project
Nicholson Construction’s Midwest team recently completed work at the Three Rivers Protection and Overflow Reduction Tunnel (3PORT) project in Fort Wayne, IN.
The 3PORT project is part of the city’s Tunnel Works Program, an initiative that involves the construction of a tunnel system to collect overflow waters and transport them to a wastewater treatment plant.
The overall project includes the construction of a deep rock tunnel, drop shafts and consolidation sewers to collect and convey overflow from eight locations along the St. Mary and Maumee Rivers. Nicholson was contracted by F.A. Wilhelm Construction Co., Inc.to design and install a temporary support of excavation (SOE) for connection between the existing gate structure and the retrieval shaft.
“We have a long history of working on CSO projects across the country,” said Dan Thome, P.E., Senior Vice President, Nicholson’s Midwest Region. “This project is going to make the roads safer and the water cleaner for the people of Fort Wayne, and we’re happyto play a small part in making that happen.”
When completed,3PORT will reduce sewer overflows to Fort Wayne’s rivers by 90% and relieve streetcflooding during major rainstorms.
Nicholson’s portion of the work for this project wrapped up in August.
